Gypsy 02:23
When I was born September corn lay wasting in the sun A poverty had ended and another had begun Too soon the joyful day was seen an answer to their sighs But before too long the wind blew strong Fine sand into their eyes When I was young and bells were rung the sound was wild and free And boys there were from every fair to rise and follow me From friends and home they far did roam and heard no silent lies And before too long the wind blew strong Fine sand into their eyes But the chilling haze of December days soon darkened on the sky And the soul I had became more sad to see the world pass by From door to door I tried once more but much to my surprise The wind was wrong and before too long Fine sand was in my eyes

Massquerade 03:05
Hand in hand on the esplanade Looks like love but its only a game that we’ve often played A meaningless masquerade Words that sing of a promise made Sounds like love but its only a song that we’ve often played A musical masquerade Through the magical trance the starlight will dance The nightingale carry you high on its harmony Then the lighting will change the caste will be strange The music be lost to the reach of the memory Catch the rainbow you see displayed Just like love the rainbow you hold will in time soon fade In a colourless masquerade Through the magical trance the starlight will dance The nightingale carry you high on its harmony Then the lighting will change the caste will be strange The music be lost to the reach of the memory Hand in hand on the esplanade Looks like love but its only a game that we’ve often played A meaningless masquerade A musical masquerade A colourless masquerade

Dance 02:06
First I was a beggar Then I was a thief Then I found a diamond ring Well that was my belief Then I was a prince Later was a king But then I lost my golden crown So let the dance begin I’ll dance………….. Then I was a soldier Fought a hundred wars Won them all but ninety nine At least I kept my horse Met a lively princess Who later was a queen But ran off with a gypsy boy So let the dance begin I’ll dance…………….. Then I was a sailor Sailed the seven seas Rose to be an admiral Your lordship if you please Sailed the mighty ocean My crew on whisky gin But then the pirates stole my ship So let the dance begin I’ll dance………..

Harlequin 04:03
Love in rhymes and hearts of diamond hard They learn their lines from a walk-on card Play their part and walk away Tricks of light and colours changing scenes But nothing is quite the way it seems The eyes conceal and the words betray Aha cried the Harlequin Oh Lady When the carnival’s gone with the man on the wire Can you bring back your soul from the costume hire When morning comes home out of the night Can you Garlands of fire on the river of a long lost cause Carry love for hire to the endless applause Of the starving on the streets of the citadel of shame Dancing to the drums and the cymbols of a fairground fiend They await what comes or what might be gleaned From the death of one as yet without a name Aha cried the Harlequin Oh Lady When the carnival’s gone with the man on the wire Can you bring back your soul from the costume hire When morning comes home out of the night Can you Daylight beams on shattered painted eyes As the raven screams from the morning skies At a carnival queen in her tattered clothes Lost and lonely in what’s left of a broken dream In a world of her own everafter seen With that look in her eyes everybody knows Aha cried the Harlequin Oh Lady When the carnival’s gone with the man on the wire Can you bring back your soul from the costume hire When morning comes home out of the night Can you

Colder than a winter midnight Run if you still can Colder than the icy moonlight The heart of a travelling man One day he’ll come back again No warning but even then His sweet words a lullaby Will break your soul Thunder on a summer sky A cold wind to make you cry A darkness to swallow you whole Colder than a winter midnight Run if you still can Colder than the icy moonlight The heart of a travelling man Rain on any other day Would never scare you quite the way It moves aside avoiding him When he comes near Deepest black his smiling eyes Inviting simple compromise An easy deal with nothing to fear Colder than a winter midnight Run if you still can Colder than the icy moonlight The heart of a travelling man Night has come on silent wings He whispers as the vampire sings Of love and dreams and happiness But nothing is real Laughter and eternal rest The blessing of infernal quest A beating heart you can no longer feel Colder than a winter midnight Run if you still can Colder than the icy moonlight The heart of a travelling man The heart of a travelling man

Flatline 03:15
Warning bell approaching danger Mirror shows a careless stranger Darkest dawn no need to soldier on No need to find some new horizon Day begins despite indifference Welcome home a form of insolence Who can care when nothing special’s there Tumbletown that’s my horizon Nailed to the mast look fore and aft Horizon 360 degree Many a craft has gone down on its draught And one of those vessels was me Into cloud vision imperfect Only white beyond the Perspex Losing flight and bleeding height Descending to my last horizon Timer on the seconds falling Switching off existence stalling Life has gone and understanding done No surprise and no horizon Nailed to the mast look fore and aft Horizon 360 degree Many a craft has gone down on its draught And one of those vessels was me

Morning comes as no surprise But still its dawning fills her eyes The fragrance of its promise faintly familiar Instills in her its calm Waiting while the memory closes the distance Softly letting the silence counter resistance Ignores her fears She’s standing still Sheds no tears And never will The time stands frozen As decision draws near For the path she has chosen When she’s had the time to hear The song of angels The song of angels Daydreams warm as eiderdown Drifting light as thistledown Remind her of a life that she has forgotten A time to be reclaimed Waiting while the memory closes the distance Softly letting the silence counter resistance Ignores her fears She’s standing still Sheds no tears And never will The time stands frozen As decision draws near For the path she has chosen When she’s had the time to hear The song of angels The song of angels Laughter distant echo tone Voices others and her own Whisper to her stories she can remember Paint pictures of her past Waiting while the memory closes the distance Softly letting the silence counter resistance Ignores her fears She’s standing still Sheds no tears And never will The time stands frozen As decision draws near For the path she has chosen When she’s had the time to hear The song of angels The song of angels

Moonstone 04:58
Silver silence murmur moonlight Clouds of endless sighs Light of dawning day too soon Will coldly drown my eyes Night is lasting still Dreaming always will If the fates must sometimes undermine All I try to underline Please don’t stand aside Moonstone A new beginning Moonstone The way to winning Moonstone The hope you’re bringing When the day begins You’ll be my guide Fingers crossed and eyes tight shut Looking to the future with the cards uncut Blind to the past and the promised land Reaching for the warmth of a helping hand Something waits outside Let it not be pride If my tracks lead backward to the end of days Or point to repetition of my former ways Please don’t stand aside Moonstone A new beginning Moonstone The way to winning Moonstone The hope you’re bringing When the day begins You’ll be my guide Safe in the dark where the starlights glow Far from the reach of the devils I know Far from the pain of the blinding storm Somewhere in the comfort of the always warm Front rank forward face Best foot standard pace Time for war and marshalling forces Buckled on steel and charging horses On from battle base Moonstone A new beginning Moonstone The way to winning Moonstone The hope you’re bringing When the day begins You’ll be my guide

Card Sharp 03:21
Lady Luck got acres low and high Throw you any colour any card you can choose But when her dealer is a crooked guy Even when you win still you will lose Don’t stop to wonder Can’t afford to go under Got to keep control until the end of the day So though life is a bitch And you will never be rich Don’t throw your hand while the game’s still in play Freeze the river but no-one skates forever Keep your eyes wide open don’t believe in free lunch One day soon you will dance on the moon But till then be ready beware of the crunch Friends can be nice But their hearts can be ice Even while they’re smiling they can blow you away So though life is a bitch And you will never be rich Don’t throw your hand while the game’s still in play Dealing diamonds is a heart breaking trade See the gambler shuffle with the queen up his sleeves Busts your bid wide open with a club or a spade Calls your king a joker with a smile as he leaves Blackjack’s for fools Solitaire rules Keep your poker face on hold for all of your stay And though life is a bitch And you will never be rich Don’t throw your hand while the games still in play

When days are dark and skies are torn When seas run heavy and the sails are worn When the storm tossed water stings you hard enough to cry Hold your wheel on steady and your head on high Till harbour lights can guide you home When nights are drawn and the stars have gone When the wing howls angry songs at you and you alone Don’t worry if your fingertips are cold and numb Your faith will keep you strong until the morning’s come Till harbour lights can guide you home When the rigging and the mast Are straining hard against the blast If the gale is ripping pieces from your ship Put your shoulder to the wheel And keep that even keel Scream into the hurricane defiance you can feel Be strong of heart don’t be afraid Through thick and thin don’t be dismayed When future seems impossible and times all wrong Your courage and your fortitude will keep you strong Till harbour lights can guide you home When the rigging and the mast Are straining hard against the blast If the gale is ripping pieces from your ship Put your shoulder to the wheel And keep that even keel Scream into the hurricane defiance you can feel Be strong of heart don’t be afraid Through thick and thin don’t be dismayed When future seems impossible and times all wrong Your courage and your fortitude will keep you strong Till harbour lights can guide you home Till harbour lights can guide you home

Caravan 04:42
A ray of dawn in an endless night The darkness flees from approaching light A torch to take us to another height In times of sorrow we prayed for such a morrow To open up our eyes Caravan Caravan Caravan in hopeless plight We see the dawn end each starlit night Clear and free the sky by day And more than once I’ve had time to say Who am I Alone in a land where I’ve never been To find a king who’s never been seen To see a star away too far To show me all we really are Caravan Caravan Caravan in hopeful quest Star bewildered till it comes to rest Peace on Earth goodwill to men But faithful follow and endure till then Caravan Caravan Caravan

Written by Joe Boyle and performed by Joe and staff and people receiving support at Penumbra Milestone.

Penumbra Milestone is an alcohol-free 10-bed step-down unit which provides short-term care for vulnerable men and women, aged 18+, who have a diagnosis of Alcohol Related Brain Damage (ARBD).

All proceeds from the sale of the album will go to mental health charity Penumbra (Charity number: SC 010387), which runs Milestone supported by NHS Lothian, City of Edinburgh Council, Midlothian Council, East Lothian Council and West Lothian Council.

The album takes its name from the Moonstone gemstone, a symbol of hope. The songs fall into three parts - Spirals, Trauma and Recovery - and reflect a common path of addiction and (hopefully) recovery.
